About Don't Be A Monster

Don't Be A Monster was founded in 2012 by haunted house owners. Our mission is simple: we want to educate and empower youth to be leaders in their school around diversity, inclusiveness, and show them how to stand up for their friends and peers. We focus on the choices a student can make when it comes to bullying, and how these choices will impact their lives as well as the lives of those around them. What makes Don’t Be A Monster unique is the way we deliver this message.

The Don’t Be A Monster program partners with local area haunted houses and area nonprofit organizations to deliver 45-minute assemblies to 4th through 9th grade students. Our program is delivered in the months of September and October during National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month and the Halloween season. Our concept is exciting (students find haunted houses and our iconic character Frank Shelly very unique) and our presentation is entertaining. This combination of factors ensures students are engaged with our material, which allows them to better understand and connect with the role they may play in both provoking and preventing bullying.

During our assemblies, students will be challenged to evaluate their understanding of community and how to be more inclusive of those around them. By teaching students concepts like diversity, expanding their social circles, being a leader, and evaluating how they treat themselves and their peers – we feel that bullying will start occurring less in schools. Additionally, students will leave the presentation equipped with the tools they need to have an educated and empathetic discussion around bullying.
